Kostomarov Nikolai Ivanovich (1817–1885) – Ukrainian and Russian historian, ethnographer, writer and critic. He graduated from Kharkov University (1837). Professor of Kyiv University in the Department of History (1846). One of the organizers (together with T. G. Shevchenko and others) Secret Cyril-Mephodiy Society and the authors of his Charter and Program. After the defeat of society (1847) and the annual imprisonment exiled to Saratov under the supervision of the police. Served in the provincial rule and continued to engage in history and ethnography. Published the book “Great Russian Songs” (1854). Had a great influence on the cultural life of the region. In 1857 he was released from supervision. In 1859 he was elected an extraordinary professor of St. Petersburg University. He was engaged in the history of mass folk movements: “Time of Troubles of the Moscow state”, “riot of Steni Razin”, “Bogdan Khmelnitsky” and others; The author of literary and artistic works: “Savva Chaly” (1838), “Kudeyar” (1875).
