Sixteen -year -old Peter, living with his mother in the village of Izmailovo near Moscow, found a small English bot in the hangar. The old broken ship was built around 1640, when close economic and political relations existed between Russia and England. By order of grandfather Peter, Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich, the ship was brought from England to Moscow through Arkhangelsk. The image of the most revered in Rus’ of the saint – Nikolai Mirliki, the patron saint of navigators was placed on his stern. A boot, who was in a deplorable state, renovated the Dutch shipbuilder in the Russian service of Karsten Brandt, who became Peter’s mentor in marine business and one of the builders of the “funeral flotilla” on Lake Poshcheevo. In 1701, the boots were placed under a canopy on the territory of the Kremlin near the bell tower of Ivan the Great.
At the end of the Northern War, during the celebrations in honor of the victory over the Swedes, a boot was taken dry by Schlisselburg, from there along the Neva – to Petersburg, where he was solemnly met by the courts of the Neva Fleet. The French ambassador Jacques de Camrodrun said that “the king ordered to take the said ship from St. Petersburg to Kronlit, accompanied by 120 yachts or booers, on which its ministers and employees were both civilian and military. „St. Nicholas “joined Kronstadt with a thunder of three thousand fireworks from weapons. He was launched into water and circled around the entire fleet ”(reports of the French consul in St. Petersburg Lavi and the plenipotentiary of the Campaign at the Russian court from 1722 to 1724. // Collection of the Imperial Russian Historical Society. SPb., 1885. T. 49. With. 370.).
Having giving his shoe the name of the “grandfather of the Russian fleet”, Peter ordered annually on August 30 to solemnly transport him along the Neva and use it in state ceremonies. A boot was stored in the Peter and Paul Fortress under a built canopy, since 1728 – in the casemates, and in 1761 a board house was built for him under the project of architect Alexander Vista for him.
The picture depicts the moment of descent the shoe on Yauza. Excited Peter from the shore watching the actions of Karsten Brandt, who repaired and equipped a boot. Franz Timmerman is on the shore among the observers, explaining the tsar of the vessel.
