The artist is Sverchkov
In the democratic consciousness, the images of the near -explosive overseer, whose responsibilities were similar to the duties of a modern district policeman, and the city, who was the lower rank of urban police, have always been associated with the repressive sides of the state system. However, the fight against the revolutionary movement and unrest was only part of their diverse responsibilities. Often they had to take risks and even sacrifice their lives for the salvation and well -being of the townsfolk. So, on November 8, 1868, the nearby overseer Alexei Tyapkin stopped the troika rushing at full support, preventing the death of passers -by. For his feat, the policeman was awarded the personal command of the emperor. Two months later, despite the efforts of the doctors, Tyapkin died of serious injuries received. On the last journey of the hero, the highest ranks of the police and the huge mass of the people were escorted.
Sverchkov’s picture dedicated to this “road accident” is full of expression. The artist, who was famous for the image of horses, masterfully conveyed the swiftness of their running and the internal tension of the figure of the city, clinging to the reins. (E. Sh.)
