A little information has been preserved about the life of the first Christians in Kyiv. The mention in the annals that the combatants of Askold and Dir accepted Christianity after going to Constantinople in 866, gives reason to believe that such examples are not unit. From the contract with the Greeks of 945 it is known that there were many Christians among the Kyiv Varangians and in Kyiv there was a church of St. Ilya. In addition, Princess Olga was baptized in 957. However, the case of sacrifice to pagan gods in 983 by Prince Vladimir, who later baptized Rus’, two Christian Varangians-John and his father Fedor, is known.
