Mosaicists in front of the “trial of three” in Venice in the second half of the 16th century

In 1539, a tribunal of three inquisitors was established in Venice to combat political turmoil – the “court of three”. One inquisitor was elected from the members of the Council of Doge who wore red clothing, and two others who were dressed in black clothes were appointed from the so -called council of the ten – the guardian who monitored the internal order in the republic.
