On May 16 (27), 1703, on the hare island, on the lands of Ingermanlandia conquered from the Swedes in the Neva delta, a few kilometers from the Gulf of Finland was laid by the Peter and Paul Fortress. After the capture of the Swedish fortification, Nienshants Peter ordered to build a fortress. Considering two options – strengthening the Swedish bastions or searching for a new place. “… Meanwhile, Mr. Captain Bombardira deigned to inspect near the sea of a convenient place for the building of the new fortress and then soon deigned to search the unified island, a comfortable position with a convenient position, which is soon, namely May 16, a week of Pentecost, and fortification. laid and named it – St. Petersburg St. Petersburg, ”is recorded in the camp journal.

There is a common version that the first stone of the fortress was laid by Peter with his own hand, and during this event, an eagle soared in the air. However, official sources allow you to classify this story to the category of legends: eagles are not found in St. Petersburg, and the king himself at that time, perhaps, was departing at the Olonets shipyard, where ships were built for the future Baltic fleet. “Fortia” was the first and main construction of the city born during the war. The date of her laying was the official date of his birth.

Fortresses and city Peter I gave a name in honor of the Holy Apostle Peter. In the early documents of 1703-1705, the names Petropol, Peterpol and S are found. Petropolis, and in 1720, the name of St. Petersburg changed to St. Petersburg, and among the people, in addition to the official name, other people who were abbreviated in the Russian manner-“Peter-Grad” or just “Peter” appeared. In May 1712, the Russian capital was transferred to St. Petersburg from ancient Moscow.

The picture captures the laying ceremony of the Peter and Paul Fortress. Peter with a plan in his hands explains the associates around him, how the fortress he had conceived, and the assembled clergy is preparing to consecrate its bookmark.
