Vyshnevolotsky water system was the first artificial water route in the history of Russia to associate Petersburg with the whole country and resolved the issue of food supply of the capital. In 1703-1708, a complex of hydraulic structures was built in the area of Vyshny Volochka and a Tveretsky Canal, connecting Tversu with the cost, and with their help, the Caspian and Baltic Seas. To keep the water level on the channel, two gateways were built, piles were driven along both shores, but since the level of the fiberba was higher than the level of the tsna, the water in it was not enough. Below the mouth of the canal on the Central Administration, gateways and additional jumper were arranged, and a shipping was opened according to the artificial water system in the spring of 1709. The courts who were walking from the Volga safely passed along the Tvers and the channel river, but when the summer came, it turned out that it was too shallow, and next year the strings with the forest could no longer go through it. It turned out that the Dutch craftsmen who built the system did not take into account the regime of Russian rivers and could not solve the problem of the water balance of the Vyshnevolotsky watershed point.
Now the dissatisfied Peter invited whore masters from Venice who could “commune to commune rivers, compose channels, deepen the mouths”, but they did not achieve the desired results. As a result, the Russian merchant Mikhail Ivanovich Serdyukov, who rebuilt the Vyshnevolotsky water system, was taken up to the case, acting as a genuine creator. In 1700, Serdyukov built a distillery, cooks, bread barns, brick and tiled factories on the banks of the TsNI and regularly took contracts for the supply of all this to Novgorod. Having accumulated serious capital, he invited Peter to “his koste” to carry out work to improve the system, receiving in return the right of duty -free income from his production for 15 years, Peter I handed him the right to maintain the Tweret channel and gateways, providing the possibility of receiving income for 50 years. Serdyukov began work, cleaned the Tweret Canal and repaired the gateway, and in 1722 heavily loaded barks freely passed from Tver to the Verkhny Volochka.
The picture depicts Peter on the Tweret gateway, where he drove, returning from the Persian campaign. The king examined all the work performed by Serdyukov and was very pleased.
